In order to further strengthen the governance and protection of the rivers across the borders between Sichuan and Chongqing, the two sides decided at the recent 2021 Sichuan-Chongqing Joint Meeting on the Work of River Chief System to collaboratively organize to formulate water system maps for 81 transboundary rivers, and protect the mother river — the Yangtze River through such measures as sharing the basic information data of the river chief system in Sichuan and Chongqing, and strengthening the joint law enforcement of transboundary rivers.

　　There are a total of 81 rivers across the borders between Sichuan and Chongqing, of which 52 are main streams. The river system maps will facilitate the related agencies of Sichuan and Chongqing in scientific management of transboundary rivers.

　　In addition, sharing basic data of the river chief system between Sichuan and Chongqing is also put on the agenda as the "smart river chief" information system plays a role in the river chief system. The two sides will explore to share GIS maps of 81 transboundary rivers, 3D model maps of major water conservancy and hydropower projects along them, as well as water quality inspection and online monitoring of nationally monitored sections for environmental protection, precipitation stations, hydrometric stations, real-time water amount acquired by important water acquirers, monitoring of quality and quantity of important drinking water sources, and monitoring of water levels and minimum discharge of important reservoirs in the adjacent areas of Sichuan and Chongqing, so as to provide Sichuan and Chongqing with information services in river and lake governance, watercourse management, water resources conservation, flood control and drought relief, and water resources management.
