Sichuan Completes 1,240 Power Grid Construction Projects in Deep Poverty-stricken Areas
Updated:2020.07.03

At 13:23 on June 30, the 110 kV substation at Jiabi, Lixian County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, was switched on successfully, marking the official operation of the 110 kV Aba Jiabi-Matang power transmission and transformation line project. This line is the last project in Sichuan for the power grid construction in the "three regions" (Tibet Autonomous Region, Tibetan regions in four provinces, and southern parts of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region), and the "three prefectures" (Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu and Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province) which are the poorest parts of China. By now, 1,240 power grid construction projects in Sichuan's deep poverty-stricken areas have been all completed, benefiting 1,107 administrative villages and hundreds of thousands of local people.

In March 2018, the State Grid Corporation of China commenced the power grid construction in "three regions" and "three prefectures" within its supply area. Since then, the State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Company has started a tough fight in Sichuan against poverty alleviation in the way of power grid construction. For all the 1,240 projects in Sichuan, RMB 5.211 billion has been invested and the total power grid length is equal to one third of the equator. Among others, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture as the major battlefield has received RMB 2.8 billion of investment and completed 682 projects, both accounting for half of the total.

As to why this battle is tough, it is because the construction conditions are extremely unfavorable. For example, some of the power transmission line of the 110 kV power transmission and transformation project in Guzeng Township, Muli County, Liangshan Prefecture ran across depopulated zones, and all supplies such as tower materials and wire needed to be transported only by mule; the 110 kV power transmission and transformation project from Jiabi to Matang in Aba Prefecture ran across virgin forest and heavy ice areas with an altitude of over 4,000 meters; the 35 kV power transmission and transformation project from Litang-Xiaba in Ganzi Prefecture ran across high-altitude areas with the highest rising 4,600 meters. As every construction staff member made an all-out effort to accomplish every construction task at the same speed and up to the same requirements, all projects have been completed as scheduled, upgrading the level of power grids in China's deep poverty-stricken areas.
