Five Sichuan Cities on National Air Quality Ranking of Top 20 Cities for April
Updated:2020.05.28

Recently, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) briefed the media on China's air quality in April 2020. Of top 20 cities in terms of air quality nationwide, five are in Sichuan Province. They are Ya'an, Suining, Guang'an, Ziyang and Neijiang, ranking third, 14th, 16th, 17th and 19th, respectively.

As required by the State Council in a three-year action plan to fight air pollution, MEE will expand the surveyed city scope for air quality rankings from 74 to 168 cities at prefecture level and above. Since July 2018, MEE has been releasing monthly air quality rankings of 20 best-performing and worst-performing cities.

Following incorporating Chengdu Plain air quality improvement into the environmental protection "Project No.1" in 2017, Sichuan again made air quality improvement of southern Sichuan part of this project last year, and five more cities declared to meet air quality standard the same year. Building on the good momentum, Sichuan is well on track towards air quality improvement this year. "Next, we will make a concentrated effort to improve air quality in southern Sichuan and Chengdu Plain to protect our blue skies," said a head from the Division of Atmospheric Environment of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Sichuan Province.

Moreover, three Sichuan cities landed on the national ranking of top 30 cities in terms of water environment quality in surface water sections under survey for this January-April. They are Panzhihua, Ya'an and Guangyuan, ranking 8th, 22nd and 26th, respectively.
