
On June 13, the 2026 Cultural and Natural Heritage Day · Main Venue in Sichuan event was held in Emeishan City, Leshan. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the inscription of Mount Emei and Leshan Giant Buddha on the World Heritage List. The Main Venue in Sichuan event, themed "Carrying Forward the Dual Heritage of Bashu, Guarding Its Cultural and Natural Treasure", closely follows the requirement of the national campaign "Cultural Relics Belong to the People and Serve the People", showcasing the achievements in the protection and utilization of cultural and natural heritage across the province.
At the opening ceremony, awards were presented to individuals including Du Shaofei, a specialist in restoring ancient Chinese calligraphy and paintings at Sichuan Museum, and Ren Junfeng, a metal artifact conservator from the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute, both of whom recently received the National May 1 Labor Medal. The Ren Junfeng Bronze Cultural Relics Conservation and Restoration Studio and the Du Shaofei Paper-based Cultural Relics Conservation and Restoration Studio were officially inaugurated on site. The winners of Sichuan's 2026 High-quality Cultural Relics Conservation Projects and Outstanding Cultural Relics Utilization Projects were also announced. The Renovation Project of the Scripture Repository at Du Fu Thatched Cottage and the Fire Protection Project for Cliff Carvings at Huangze Temple were recognized as High-quality Cultural Relics Conservation Projects. The Pingwu Bao'en Temple North-South Corridor Exhibition Project and the Display Project of the Former Site of the Mint of the Workers' and Peasants' Bank of Sichuan-Shaanxi were recognized as Outstanding Cultural Relics Utilization Projects.
At the event venue, the Expert Committee for the Conservation of Mount Emei and Leshan Giant Buddha World Cultural and Natural Heritage was officially unveiled. Frontline biodiversity conservation practitioners and cultural relics safety guardians shared their stories of heritage protection. The event also promoted the Sichuan Provincial Youth Cultural Heritage Knowledge Contest. Four world cultural and natural heritage sites in China jointly released a public benefit co-branded card, which will make tangible progress toward enabling all people to share the achievements of heritage conservation.
On the same day, the digital exhibition "The Millennia of Shu Roads: The Epic of Mountains and Rivers and the Backbone of China" was officially launched. A thematic exhibition marking the 30th anniversary of the inscription of Mount Emei and Leshan Giant Buddha on the World Heritage List and an achievement exhibition themed on Sichuan's covered bridges opened concurrently.
The main venue event is jointly organized by the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Heritage Administration, the Sichuan Provincial Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the Leshan Municipal People's Government.
