The year 2026 marks the fifth anniversary of the official establishment of the Giant Panda National Park. On June 2, the press event titled "Beautiful China Tour - Exploring National Parks" officially kicked off at Dengchigou, Baoxing County, Ya'an City, Sichuan Province. Over a hundred journalists from major media outlets across the country, including central and local news media, headed into the dense forests spanning Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces to comprehensively document the fruitful achievements made over the past five years in ecological conservation and green development within the Giant Panda National Park.

This event is jointly organized by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Water Resources. Journalist teams visited key areas across the three provinces, conducting on-site inspections at ecological restoration sites, scientific research and monitoring stations, community co-managed demonstration villages, and nature education bases. Centering on priority tasks including giant panda conservation and breeding, biodiversity preservation, and ecological development benefiting the people, they presented vivid practices of national park development from multiple perspectives. Journalists from Sichuan Daily Press Group conducted in-depth interviews in the three provinces, witnessing and documenting the ecological landscapes and conservation achievements across the regions.

As one of China's first batch of national parks, the Giant Panda National Park was officially inaugurated in October 2021. Spanning Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, it covers a total area of 22,000 square kilometers and serves as the core habitat for wild giant pandas and a biodiversity hotspot worldwide. The Sichuan section constitutes the core area of the park, with an area of 19,300 square kilometers, accounting for nearly 88 percent of the park's total territory. It is home to 1,227 wild giant pandas, representing 92 percent of the park's wild giant panda population. After five years of dedicated efforts, 13 ecological corridors have been built to link habitats of fragmented giant panda populations. Currently, the park protects nearly 1,400 wild giant pandas, representing over 70 percent of China's total wild giant panda population.

While protecting giant pandas, the national treasure, the integrity of the park's ecosystem has been continuously enhanced, building a strong survival barrier for numerous rare flora and fauna such as the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys, takins, dove trees, and Chinese yew trees, presenting an ecological picture of harmonious coexistence among all species. The three provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu have maintained collaboration and coordination, and continuously optimized the park's conservation management system. Through diverse measures such as artificial breeding, rewilding and release, ecological restoration, and community co-construction, a win-win outcome has been achieved for giant panda conservation and regional ecological development.

The Giant Panda National Park stands as a landmark achievement in China's ecological civilization development and a model for global biodiversity conservation. China is now accelerating the development of a nature reserve system with national parks as the mainstay. Going forward, supported by increasingly improved institutional mechanisms and technological empowerment, this ecologically rich land will continue to bolster the shield for biodiversity conservation and inject sustained green momentum into the building of a Beautiful China.
