Sichuan to Implement Spring and Autumn Holidays for Primary and Secondary Schools
Updated: 2025.11.07

To deepen the collaboration between schools, families, and society in educating students, and to promote students' well-rounded physical and mental development, the provincial Department of Education and ten other departments recently jointly issued a notice to implement the spring and autumn holiday system for primary and secondary schools across the province.

The spring and autumn holidays refer to short vacation periods established during the spring and autumn semesters for primary and secondary students, distinct from the longer summer and winter holidays. The implementation of spring and autumn holidays in Sichuan follows the principles of "adapting to local conditions, rational arrangement, and coordinated advancement". This approach respects regional diversity, considers differences across educational stages, and encourages staggered scheduling.

Regarding the scheduling of breaks, the policy specifies that spring and autumn holidays are generally scheduled around mid-semester in the spring and autumn terms (i.e., during April–May and October–November), with each holiday lasting three days in principle. The spring and autumn holidays will be coordinated by individual cities and prefectures, which will develop flexible plans based on local conditions. The spring and autumn holidays may be scheduled to connect with statutory holidays, weekends, and spring/autumn outings. In rural areas, they can align with local busy farming seasons, while ethnic regions may integrate them with local holiday calendars.

In response to parents' concerns regarding the challenges of taking leave to attend to their children, the policy explicitly details measures such as flexible leave arrangements, supplementary childcare provisions, venue-related discounts, and safety assurances. To facilitate family travel, employers are encouraged to implement flexible and staggered leave policies, prioritizing schedule adjustments and compensatory time off for employees with minor children during the spring and autumn holidays. Schools will simultaneously provide free guaranteed childcare services and organize various special activities to alleviate parents' concerns. Public cultural and tourism venues such as museums, science and technology museums, and scenic spots will introduce preferential opening policies to enrich consumption options during the holidays. In addition, relevant departments will strengthen students' safety education and ensure smooth transportation for their trips, thus building a solid safety foundation for the smooth and orderly implementation of the spring and autumn holidays.
