Exquisite Gold Ware Unearthed from Sanxingdui |
|
A batch of exquisite gold ware, including the stunning, first-discovered bird-shaped gold ornaments, was found in archaeological excavations in the sacrificial area of Sanxingdui Site on March 22.
That day, archaeologists obtained a gold foil in Sacrificial Pit 5. It bears similar morphological features to those previously found in the same pit. The archaeologists excavating these gold foils found that they are orderly, rather than randomly, arranged. Ornamental jade tubes are scattered around, and all gold foils have a round hole at the center. Wang Wei, chairman of the Society for Chinese Archeology, said: "What has so far been found in Sacrificial Pit 5 are high-grade cultural relics. It is likely that the scattered gold foils are ornaments sewn onto a robe or cloak. They, together with the gold mask, form an exquisite system." As gold foils are distributed everywhere in Sacrificial Pit 5, experts suggest that they be excavated as a whole so that they can be restored to their original look.
Cultural relics restorers completed the restoration of a gold foil and for the first time put it on display.
Archaeologists also made important discoveries in Sacrificial Pit 8, the largest in Sanxingdui Site.
