Sichuan to Put in Place the Fishing Ban along the Yangtze River by the End of September
Updated:2020.06.30

Sichuan will have completed the "in-service" and "out-of-service" check of all fishing vessels and fishermen in the province by the end of July, and on the basis, it works to put in place the fishing ban among basically all in-service fishing vessels along the Yangtze River by the end of September, according to Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on June 28.

As per the plan by the central government, Sichuan must put in place the fishing ban along the Yangtze River within the year so as to restore aquatic organism resources, ecosystems and environments. Based on a previous canvass, 10,145 fishing vessels that involve 15,655 fishermen in 17 cities (prefectures) and 81 counties (cities/districts) in the province are subject to the fishing ban. Now, nearly all these fishermen and fishing vessels have been filed. Of them, 10,026 fishermen and 7,727 fishing vessels are out of fishing, and 6,037 fishing vessels are dismantled. Notably, all fishing vessels and fishermen of reserves in the province are out of fishing.

Now, the province is introducing measures such as employment assistance, old-age insurance, targeted poverty alleviation and temporary subsidy to provide for the basic needs of fishermen out of fishing. As of today, it had trickled 534 million yuan of compensation from the central government and 194 million yuan of capital from the local finance directly down to fishermen out of fishing for temporary subsidy, social insurance and vocational skill training.

In the future, Sichuan will formulate supporting relocation guarantee policies and expand employment channels such as skill training and setting public welfare posts to ensure that fishermen can quit fishing without worries for future living, said a head from Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
