Sichuan Province Releases the First Cohort of Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Bases, including 171 Sites
Updated:2019.07.18

On July 16, the Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism released the list for the first cohort of Sichuan Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Bases, including 171 sites, which focuses on national and provincial intangible cultural heritage projects and selects sites boasting great potential for tourism development. This is another important measure to promote the in-depth integration of culture and tourism after the department released 10 intangible cultural heritage tourist routes in June this year.

It is said that the release of the list aimed to explore new ways of experience to facilitate culture and tourism integration and rural revitalization, based on the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage. These experience bases are all over the province, covering ten categories of intangible cultural heritage, which are a typical example of characteristic intangible cultural heritage projects inheriting practices and achievements. These bases have a profound cultural atmosphere, which can provide interactive experience for visitors with rich and diversified intangible cultural heritage projects, deepening the understanding and experience of visitors on the intangible cultural heritage crafts and characteristics in Sichuan Province, enrich cultural experience for visitors and improve cultural value of tourism. The reporter noticed that among the list there are a number of national intangible cultural heritage projects, such as Qingshen bamboo weaving, Mianzhu New Year pictures and Shu silk and embroidery. Unlike traditional approaches, which mainly focus on protection and craft inheritance, now intangible cultural heritage projects have launched a wealth of exhibition and experience projects, based on culture and creation parks and museums. For example, in the culture creation blocks in Wenshu Monastery, natural intangible cultural heritage, such as Shu embroidery, bamboo weaving from Qu County, and silver thread craft in Chengdu are showcased to visitors. At the Chengdu Lacquer Craft Factory, such picture is presented that craftsmen are making traditional lacquers with traditional craftsmanship. In Mingyue Village in Pujiang County and Daoming Town in Chongzhou City, visitors can have the opportunity to make ceramics by themselves, or experience bamboo weaving with the instruction of craftsmen.

Head from the department introduced that the release of the list was in line with the release of 10 intangible cultural heritage tour routes earlier. In the future, these bases, together with intangible cultural heritage training centers and intangible experience areas, will become the highlights along the intangible cultural heritage tourism routes, relying on intangible cultural heritage projects as the core and tourist routes and scenic spots too.
