Greece to Set up Consulate General in Chengdu

  On November 11 local time, President Xi Jinping, who was on a state visit to Greece, met with Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens. During the meeting, the two sides issued the Joint Statement between the People's Republic of China and the Hellenic Republic on Strengthening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which stated that "China approved Greece to set up a consulate general in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province".

  Greece became the 19th country approved to set up a consular in Sichuan after Nepal.

  In recent years, the relations between Sichuan Province and Greece have been developing with ongoing high-level visits, deepening economic and trade cooperation and frequent personnel exchanges. The two sides have achieved remarkable cooperation results especially in the fields of international friendship city, humanities and tourism. During the first three quarters of 2019, the total export-import volume between Sichuan province and Greece was RMB 388.69 million, with a year-on-year growth of 88.38%. Sichuan Province has signed a memorandum on strengthening friendly exchanges and cooperation with Peloponnese of Greece, and Chengdu has signed a friendly exchange and cooperation agreement with Patra City, Greece, and established friendly cooperation relations with Athens, Greece.

  The relevant official in charge of the Foreign Affairs Office of Sichuan Province said that Sichuan had reached a consensus with Greece on the opening of a direct flight from Chengdu to Athens, which is expected to be implemented as soon as possible.
