The First Direct Train to Vienna of China-Euro Railway Express Departing in Chengdu
Updated:2018.04.18

“Let’s meet in Vienna.” At 10:35 on April 12th, with the witness of Austrian President Van Der Bellen and Prime Minister Kurz, the first direct train to Vienna of China-Euro Railway Express (Chengdu-Euro Railway Express) departs form Chengdu International Railway Port, heading for Vienna---the capital of Austria. Up to now, there are 16 international train routes of China-Euro Railway Express (Chengdu-Euro Railway Express) with the important newly-joint freight channel to Europe in China’s western region.

“The opening of China-Euro Railway Express is of great significance to the economic cooperation between the two countries.” Austrian President Van Der Bellen said in his speech that more Austrian companies will come to Sichuan to settle down in the future, bringing about exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade and culture. Thus, Sino-Australian relations will also become closer.

The 41 containers of the train were loaded with LED display screens, tires, airborne counterweights, lamps, decorative materials and daily necessities, worth about 1.5 million dollars with a total weight of about 370 tons. The express train departs from Chengdu International Railway Port, exits the boundary of China in Khorgas Port and passes through countries including Kazakhstan, Russia and Slovakia. It runs about 9,800 kilometers and is expected to arrive in Austrian capital Vienna in 13 days.

In the China-Euro Railway Express Chengdu-Vienna First Block Train Ceremony, Austrian Federal Railways Corporation and Chengdu International Railway Port Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of cooperation. This route of China-Euro Railway Express (Chengdu-Euro Railway Express) will gradually be normalized as the cooperation between Chengdu and Vienna deepens, mutual trade pushes, industry progresses, and the international markets of the two sides mature.

There are 16 international routes of China-Euro Railway Express (Chengdu-Euro Railway Express) from Chengdu to Lodz, Moscow, Prague and Milan. With the lead in taking full advantages of full operations of the port, a “Y”-shaped international logistics channel has been built, which starts from Chengdu west to the hinterland of Europe, north to Russia and south to ASEAN.

Since the opening of China-Euro Railway Express (Chengdu-Euro Railway Express) in 2013, Sichuan has vigorously implemented the “Chengdu-Euro+” strategy and gradually established a new pattern of opening up from the west to the south. With China-Euro Railway Express (Chengdu-Euro Railway Express) as a link, Sichuan has further strengthened its all-round contacts with European countries and has become a model for China’s inland regions to integrate into the national “Belt and Road Initiative” by the Express Railway.

Mr. Zhu Hexin, Vice Governor of Sichuan Provincial People’s Government, Dr. Kneissl, Foreign Minister of Austria, Dr. Christoph Leitl, Chairman of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, Dr. Stift, Austrian Ambassador to China, Mr. Li Xiaosi, Chinese Ambassador to Austria as well as other representatives from both sides jointly attended the ceremony.
