Xichang Satellite Launch Center Hitting a New Record
Updated:2017.11.08

The first satellite of Beidou-3 Global Network was launched at Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC) on the evening of Nov.5th. So far, all Beidou satellites in China have flew here to space with 100% success rate, which has laid a solid foundation for the progress of China's Beidou satellite project.

On October 31st, 2000, China's first Beidou navigation test satellite was successfully launched at Xichang Satellite Launch Center. Mr.Lin Yunan, Director of Human Resources Department, XSLC said: "Since then, 25 launches of Beidou satellites have all been successfully completed here during the past 17 years; 29 Beidou satellites including 4 experimental ones were all sent to space."

Xichang Satellite Launch Center, established in December, 1970, the largest aerospace launch site with the highest launching orbit in China, is mainly to launch geosynchronous orbit satellites. Since the first launch in 1984, more than 100 domestic and foreign spacecrafts have been sent into space here; it has created more than 10 "first" in the history of China's aerospace industry, such as the successful launch of the first test communication satellite in China".

Beidou satellite navigation constellation consists of medium orbit satellites, tilting earth orbit satellites and geostationary orbit satellites, and all of them are of middle and high orbits. Mr. Lin said: “At present, the medium and high orbit satellites can only be launched by A-series rocket of CZ-3, while this rocket can only be launched at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center." In order to improve the success rate of launch, XSLC began to build quality management system in 2004, and became the first space launch site audited by ISO9001 system in September 2006 in China.

In April 2007, the first satellite of Beidou-2 was launched. Facing multiple challenges then such as the first use of the novel No. 3 launch station and remote control mode and the first launch of circular orbit satellites, science and technology personnel in XSLC have analyzed the overall situation, identifying 62 risk factors and adopting 136 measures, which have ensured control of task during the whole course, and successful launch of the satellite into the scheduled orbit eventually.

According to the plan, 18 Beidou-3 satellites will be launched by the end of 2018, covering countries of the "the Belt and Road Initiative”; by 2020, more than 30 network satellites will be launched to realize the global service.

"This means that the Xichang Satellite Launch Center will enter a period with high density of Beidou satellite launch in the next few years." Ms. Zhang Xiaoxia, Director of Publicity Department said so. They will ensure that each task can be successfully completed by full preparation and accordance with the procedures, plans, and processes.

Up to now, the number of launches in this center has firstly exceeded 100 among the four major launching sites in China; it has created a spaceflight wonder in the world by 81 consecutive successful launches since 1997.
