The Second Giant Panda Releasing Base in Sichuan Will Be Opened by the End of 2016 |

On January 21st, reporters learned from Sichuan Forestry Working Conference held in Chengdu that the second giant panda releasing base in Sichuan, Daxiangling Giant Panda Releasing Base located at Yingjing County, Ya’an City, would be completed construction before July and would be opened in 2016. As the earthquake reconstruction project after 4•20 Lushan Strong Earthquake, Daxiangling Giant Panda Releasing Base was initiated to construct in the end of 2014, a part within Daxiangling Provincial Level Natural Reserve. According to relevant officials from Forestry Department of Sichuan Province, the reason why Daxiangling was selected as releasing base was that the giant panda population of Daxiangling was comparatively small and faced with the disturbance from external environment. Moreover, Sichuan will increase forest area of 1.6 million Mu through a new round of ecological projects such as conversion of degraded farm land into forest and grass land, the protection and construction of Tibetan Region of Western Sichuan, and Greening Sichuan and so on. On this basis, the forest coverage rate of Sichuan will be expected to surpass 36.24% by the end of 2016. By 2020, Sichuan will comprehensively complete the ecological barrier of the Yangtze River and the forest coverage of Sichuan will amount to 37%. The wetlands will be over 250 million Mu. Mr. Shimu Quha, Vice Governor of Sichuan Provincial People's Government, presented at the conference and delivered a speech. |
