International Copyright Forum Will Be Held in Chengdu on Sept. 15 |

Since September 15th, industrial leaders from America, Australia, Russia, Italy and so on working in music, publication, film, television and the Internet, and officials from World Intellectual Property Organization will gather at Chengdu Century City New International Convention and Exhibition Center to discuss the latest issues concerning copyright protection in International Copyright Forum.
International Copyright Forum is organized by World Intellectual Property Organization and National Copyright Administration of the People's Republic of China, a relevant activity of the 5th China International Copyright Expo to be held from September 15th to 19th in Chengdu, the first time to be held except Beijing. The reason why Chengdu is selected as host city is that Chengdu is the first Copyright Demonstration City in China. Besides, Sichuan has well developed in copyright protection and copyright industry and accumulated successful experience in promoting economy development with the help of copyright. This is also an important reason. Sichuan’s abundant cultural resources have attracted the attention from copyright institutes.
Mr. Zhang Hongbo, executive director-general of China Written Works Copyright Society, deemed in an interview on September 12th that Chengdu’s geographical advantages and Sichuan’s local cultural heritages had been the focus of International institutes. He also revealed that the novel, Red Poppies (Chen Ai Luo Ding), written by A Lai, would be translated and published in Russia in the next two years. China Written Works Copyright Society hoped to hunt for more excellent works on 5th China International Copyright Expo.
According to the executive committee of China International Copyright Expo, selecting Chengdu as host city will benefit cultural exchanges between western China and eastern, middle areas, and is of great significance in promoting the integration of China cultural creative industries. After honored as the first copyright demonstration city in China, Chengdu has draw international attention. World Intellectual Copyright Organization has appointed officials to research Chengdu twice, wishing that Chengdu could be taken as an example for developing counties to enhance economic and social development.
In recent years, Sichuan's cultural resources, such as the giant pandas, Jinsha Museum, Sanxingdui Museum and Three Kingdoms culture, have been a crucial source for original works of animation games in the world. 5th China International Copyright Expo will exhibit plentiful cultural products with Sichuan features. Paper umbrella from Fenshui Township of Luzhou, renowned for “living fossil for China paper umbrella”, will be authorized to be sold during the Expo. Other local craft boutiques, for example, Mianzhu New Year picture, Chengdu lacquers, Qingshen weaving products, Zang and Qiang embroideries, will be displayed at relevant sections for copyright management institutes to procure. The added value of copyright industry of Chengdu had exceeded 150 billion yuan in 2013.
Last year, the added value of copyright industry of Chengdu, amounting to 151.9 billion yuan, accounting for 16.68% of the municipal GDP. Officials from Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Copyright introduced that there had not been uniform standards in collecting copyright industry statistics. Chengdu has carried out copyright industry statistics in continuous 4 years. Based on statistical and analysis results, Chengdu has released Development Report for Chengdu Copyright Industry in 2013. All these could be the heated discussed issues on International Copyright Forum. An innovation in copyright protection created by Chengdu is to fund for all kinds of copyright registration. In 2013, Chengdu subsidized about 1.85 million yuan for 2,657 copyright registrations for different works. Mr. Zhang Wanfu, director of Copyright Protection Department of Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Copyright, thought that carrying out copyright registration for enterprises and innovative institutes would benefit copyright protection and Chengdu had set a good example. Since 2003, Chengdu issues White Paper on Intellectual Property Protection in Chengdu. Besides, Chengdu also implements various popularizing copyright knowledge projects, for instance, Copyright Cadre Project, Copyright Children Project, Copyright Talent Project, and so on.
Statistics from recent years have revealed that Chengdu’s related copyright industries with the focus on information and software have increased with an average rate of 30% . The share of annual added value in GDP is 6.25 percentage points higher than the national average figure. Over 200 Fortune 500 companies, such as IBM, Nokia, Accenture, Freescale, Symantec, etc., have settled in Chengdu for its promising copyright protection environment in Chengdu. In the last 3 years, there have been over 230,000 job opportunities created by copyright industry in Chengdu. |
