Chengdu-Zigong-Luzhou-Chishui Expressway Officially Open to Traffic
Updated:2014.06.12

The Chengdu-Zigong-Luzhou-Chishui Expressway, a total length of 78 kilometers, is designed in line with the two-way and four-lane standard with the maximum speed limit of 120 km/h. In August, 2013, the Luzhou Section of the expressway was open to traffic i.e. from Longguanshan tunnel to Yangtianwo hub interchange, a total of 16 kilometers.

Starting at Chengdu city to the north, the whole expressway then travels southern-wards through four cities, named Meishan, Neijiang, Zigong and Luzhou respectively, and ends at the Zunyi-to-Chishui expressway. The whole expressway totals 293 kilometers, and applies two-way six-lane or four-lane standards to different sections with designed driving speed varying from 80 to 120 km/h.

In September, 2012, Chengdu-Renshou and Neijiang-Zigong sections had pre-opened to traffic. In August 30, 2013, a section from Zigong to Luzhou had completed its construction and opened to traffic. Currently, it only takes 2.5 hours to drive from Chengdu to Luzhou, 1 hour less than driving through Chengdu-Chongqing Expressway.

After the Chengdu-Zigong-Luzhou-Chishui expressway is wholly open to traffic at the end of this month, about six hours will be enough for you to drive from Chengdu to Guiyang.

"It is not only about the time-saving. The existence of the expressway has bonded together two major urban agglomerations and truly built up a 'Chinese Liquor Golden Triangle' fast track."  Liang Zhongyuan, the director of the Luzhou City Transportation Bureau, said that the completion of this road will help Chengdu urban agglomerations join hands with southeastern Sichuan ones, and open up a quick passage to the southeast through rivers and seas for the entire Sichuan Province as well.

Liang explained that since Yibin-Luzhou expressway is connected with Chengdu-Zigong-Luzhou-Chishui expressway and Chishui-Zunyi expressway, the whole expressway networks completely activate the following three cities: Luzhou, Yibin and Guizhou, known as the “Chinese Liquor Golden Triangle”. Lin Zhiqiang, a local driver in Luzhou, said “Departing from Luzhou, it takes a little more than one hour to drive to Maotai, and about one hour to arrive at Yibin. You are able to drive to the city that produces the liquor you would like to taste in a short time. Unbelievably convenient!”

Since the expressway is directly connected with the golden waterway of Yangtze River, it becomes the closest fast channel from Chengdu to Luzhou Port, and the most convenient transportation passage from Sichuan Province to southeast coastal areas such as the Pearl River Delta and Beibu Gulf. Except through the golden waterway, southeast coastal areas such as the Pearl River Delta and Beibu Gulf are also accessible via Guizhou. This really realizes the goal of "going through rivers and seas” and helps Sichuan Province strengthen the economic and trade ties with Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and other provinces.

For the convenience of local villagers, two control projects located in Luzhou Section – Huangyi Yangtze River Bridge and Chishui River Bridge – both have pedestrian paths. Huangyi Yangtze River Bridge covers a total length of 1320 meters, and the Chishui River Bridge 426 meters, with 1.5-2 meters width as one-way sidewalk.

  How Long?

Starting at Chengdu city to the north, the whole expressway then travels southern-wards through four cities, named Meishan, Neijiang, Zigong and Luzhou respectively, and ends at the Zunyi-to-Chishui expressway. The whole expressway totals 293 kilometers, and applies two-way six-lane or four-lane standards to different sections with designed driving speed varying from 80 to 120 km/h.

  How Fast?

At present, if starting from Chengdu, through Chengdu-Nanchong expressway, and Suining-Chongqing expressway to Chongqing, and then via Guiyang-Zunyi expressway to Guiyang, a driver needs about 8 hours to finish the entire ride, more than 700 kilometers. However, after the Chengdu-Zigong-Luzhou-Chishui expressway is wholly open to traffic, it merely takes 6 hours or so to drive from Chengdu to Luzhou, and then through Chishui-Zunyi and Guiyang-Zunyi expressway to Guiyang, covering only 600 kilometers.

  What Fun?

Since the opening of the Chengdu-Zigong-Luzhou-Chishui expressway, plenty of tourist spots are accessible at 2-hour-driving distance. It takes tourists no more than 2 hours from Shidong toll station to Dongwo scenic spot, from Yaoba toll station to Yaoba ancient town, from Fawang Temble toll station to Fawang Temple scenic spot, after arriving at Jiuzhi then to Huangjing Laolin, Chishui Sidong Valley scenic spots, or Bing’an ancient town.
